QField 4.2.11, Android.

Context. I audit fibre-optic infrastructure. For every box I inspect I attach photos to an ExternalResource field (DocumentViewer = 1, relative storage). I do not take those photos with QField's camera: I use a GPS camera app that burns the coordinates and timestamp into the image itself, because our quality control reads those coordinates back by OCR from the picture. So my normal workflow is always "attach an existing picture from the gallery", never "take a new photo".

What happens. In the attribute form, the camera is one tap away, but attaching an existing picture takes five: tap the field, scroll down, tap "attach a gallery item", tap the picture, then the gallery. I do this dozens of times a day — I inspect up to 40 boxes a day, with up to 6 photos each.

What I expected. Older documentation describes two buttons side by side. For example this qgis-user message about the attachment widget:

"you'll have two buttons in your form in your mobile device, one which opens your camera to take a picture and other to select an already saved picture from your device file system"

That is exactly what I need, and what I remember having.

What I tried. DocumentViewer 0 and 1, with and without FileWidgetFilter, relative and absolute storage. None of them changes which action sits in front — the camera is always the primary button and the gallery stays in the "…" menu (5th position). I could not find any project setting, QField setting or expression variable controlling this.

Request. Could the attachment widget expose "attach a gallery item" as a first-class button next to the camera — or let the project author choose which action is primary? A per-field setting would be ideal, but even a global QField preference would solve it.
